I don’t speak until the waters overflow their banks leonard cohen’s bibliography

The following text has been edited from the Wikipedia.org page on Cohen, as well as Cohen’s official website.

Part of the reason why Cohen’s early work revealed such a high degree of achievement is that he was an accomplished literary figure before he ever began to record. In 1951, Cohen enrolled at McGill University, where he became president of the McGill Debating Union. Literary influences during this time included Yeats, Whitman and Henry Miller. His first published book of poetry, Let Us Compare Mythologies (1956), was the first published book in the McGill Poetry Series, while Cohen was still an undergraduate student. The Spice-Box of Earth (1961) made him well known in poetry circles in Canada.

Cohen applied a strong work ethic to his early and keen literary ambitions. He wrote poetry and fiction through much of the 1960s, and preferred to live in quasi-reclusive circumstances. After moving to Hydra, a Greek island, Cohen published the poetry collection Flowers for Hitler (1964), and the novels The Favourite Game (1963) - an autobiographical bildungsroman about a young man who discovers his identity through writing - and Beautiful Losers (1966). These books had already brought Cohen considerable recognition in his native Canada before he became recognised as a musician.

Cohen’s dual music/literature careers have continued feeding each other over the decades his songs revealing a literary quality rare in the world of popular music, and his poetry and prose informed by a rich musicality.
